The “Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code” exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is now open along with an interactive companion website, created by d’Vinci Interactive. Both are designed to educate the public about the importance of genomic science. is a multimedia-rich, educational website that gives educators, students and the general public a deeper understanding of this fascinating subject before and after their trip. In addition, the website provides an educational experience for those unable to visit the Smithsonian in person. The site includes an interactive timeline that traces the evolution of modern genetics from the experiments of Gregor Mendel in the mid-1800s through the completion of the National Human Genome Project in 2003. Other website features align with the exhibit and go into more depth about topics like genomic medicine, genomic social issues, genomic evolution and many others. In the near future, a virtual tour, exclusive video content and community features will be added to the website.

The National Museum of Natural History exhibit focuses on the human genome and looks at human identity in the context of the natural world. The 2,500 square-foot exhibition is the product of a partnership between the Museum and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The exhibition and website celebrate the 10th anniversary of sequencing of the human genome and the 60th anniversary of Watson and Crick’s discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. After a year at the Museum, the exhibit will travel around the country, extending its reach to an even broader audience. The website will be maintained and refreshed into the future.
