In less than 2 months, students have read more than 84,800 books

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. August 13, 2013- Students at Chicago Public School’s Florence Nightingale Elementary School have wasted no time exploring the more than 4,000 enhanced digital books that they have access to through the PLUS Tech (Personalized Libraries to Uplift Students) initiative offered through Chicago Public School’s (CPS) Department of Libraries and myON.

PLUS Tech is a technology-training program created by the CPS Department of Libraries to deliver online professional development to its teacher and media specialists. By completing various benchmarks within the training program, librarians qualified their schools for various prizes, the top prize being a complimentary one-year site license to myON reader. More than 9200 CPS students are participating in the literacy initiative have logged into myON reader and to date, have read 84,880 books, the equivalent of more than 85 full school days spent reading!

Barbara Stewart, who was one of the 80+ CPS media specialists awarded access to myON, is already seeing it have a positive impact with her students. “Reading because one has to or is told to does not have the same effect as a student reading because they enjoy it. myON reader provides students a personal literacy environment they are comfortable in that can be accessed both at school and at home.” Stewart said. She continued, “Watching my students’ skill level and love for reading grow has been immensely rewarding. Students at Florence Nightingale Elementary have read nearly 10,000 books since gaining access to myON.”

myON reader provides a unique, personalized, online environment that offers students access to the largest collection of enhanced digital books with multimedia supports, including audio, text highlighting and an embedded dictionary. From the more than 4,000 titles available, each student is provided a recommended booklist that is automatically created based on individual interests and reading levels using The Lexile® Framework for Reading. This gives students the choice to read what they want, at the right reading level, making reading fun, in turn motivating them to become better readers.

“We are thrilled to be participating in the Tech Plus Initiative within CPS, and applaud all of the media specialists, like Barbara Stewart, that have been able to take full advantage of their complimentary subscription to myON, ” said myON President Todd Brekhus. He added, “It has been great to see all the wonderful things the students at Florence Nightingale and CPS in general have accomplished since gaining access to our personalized literacy solution, myON.”
