Initiative, Sponsored by Flipped Learning Network, Promotes Student-Centered Learning Environment
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Aug. 27, 2013 – As technology transforms the classroom, teaching is changing as well. When students head back to school this year, they may discover that monotonous lectures and mundane activities are a thing of the past when their teachersdecide to flip the classroom. Educators across the globe will take a pledge to flip one lesson on Friday, Sept. 6, the first “Flipped Day.” Hundreds of educators from 10 countries have already taken the pledge to use this innovative model of instruction on that day.
In the Flipped Learning model, some or most of direct instruction is delivered outside the group learning space using video or other modes of delivery. Class time, then, is available for students to engage in hands-on learning, collaborate with their peers, and evaluate their progress and for teachers to provide one-on-one assistance, guidance and inspiration.
According to a survey conducted by the Speak Up National Research Project (Fall 2012), it is estimated that only three percent of the teachers in the U.S. know about or “do” flipped learning. However, 27 percent of principals indicated their teachers wanted to try it this year.
Hosted by the FlippedLearning Network, TechSmith, Pearson and the companies listed below, Flipped Day aims to increase awareness of this student-centered instructional model by asking teachers to take the pledge to flip one with the expectation this leads to further flipped units or an entire course.
Teachers can either create or curate a lesson on Flipped Day. FlippedLearning.org offers tutorials for creating videos as well as video lessons from companies and nonprofits that teachers can adapt to fit in their classrooms.
