BALTIMORE, MD (September 16, 2013)—Flipped Learning is one of the most discussed learning methods in classrooms today, in which instruction moves from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered learning environment. When is it appropriate to “flip” the traditional classroom model and how can teachers effectively flip their classes?

“In the Flipped Learning model, direct instruction is delivered outside the classroom using video or other digital content. Class time is then available for students to engage in hands-on learning, collaborate with their peers, and evaluate their progress and for teachers to provide one-on-one assistance, guidance and inspiration,” said Kari Arfstrom, Executive Director of Flipped Learning Network (FLN).

A fall 2012 Project Tomorrow© survey of more than 466,000 K–12 students, parents, teachers, and administrators indicated that 18 percent of teachers and 27 percent of administrators said they were interested in trying flipped learning this year, and nearly 60 percent of students in grades 6-12 agreed with the statement that flipped learning “would be a good way for me to learn.”

According to FLN, teachers of flipped classrooms report higher student achievement, increased student engagement, and better attitudes toward learning and school—and many teachers report that their job satisfaction has improved and that they are feeling re-energized by heightened interaction with students.
