The Virtual High School Enhances Online Courses with ReadSpeaker Rich Media

VHS Students Can Now Listen to Course Content On Their Computers & Mobile Devices

October 22, 2013, Maynard, MA & McLean, VA – The Virtual High School (, nonprofit pioneer of K-12 online learning and ReadSpeaker ( today announced the two organizations have partnered to deliver a major enhancement to The Virtual High School (VHS) catalog of nearly 400 online courses. VHS has integrated ReadSpeaker’s text-to-voice technology into their course curriculum on the Desire2Learn platform so that students can better understand, and complete their assignments, while online or on-the-go.

ReadSpeaker’s integration with the Desire2Learn Learning Environment made it easy for VHS to implement the browser-based solution. Within seconds, the organization enabled it on a course level and within all lesson documents so VHS students can have all course web pages and documents read to them with one click of a button. Individuals can also download audio files into an mp3 format and listen to them on iPads, iPhones and other mobile devices.

VHS’ mission is to provide students with access to high-quality online and blended learning experiences, while supporting educators with the professional development and services they need to provide an effective 21st century education to every student. VHS partner schools have access to 190 core, elective, and AP® courses that inspire, ignite and deepen learning as well as enable students to develop independent learning skills, explore college majors and careers, earn credits and participate in global classrooms. Courses are taught by highly qualified teachers who are specially trained in online teaching best practices, and are certified in their subject areas.

ReadSpeaker is a valuable tool for all types of VHS students, but especially those who are below average readers or on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) due to learning or physical disabilities, such as dyslexia or visual impairments. The ReadSpeaker technology allows VHS to level the playing field and appeal to students with various needs.

“Ensuring that our courses are both multimedia rich and suitable for all learners is something that is central to our mission,” said Storie Walsh, Director of Instructional Technology for VHS. “ReadSpeaker was a natural fit because it gives all of our students an audio option. Since implementing the technology a short time ago, we’ve been encouraged by how popular it’s been.”
