First held in 2000, International Education Week is now celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide.

“International study and work connects students and scholars, enabling them to collaborate and tackle today’s foremost global challenges, and gain the knowledge, skills, and self-reliance that are needed to compete in the globalized economy of the 21st century,” said the Departments in a statement. “Throughout the week, students, educators, and citizens will be celebrating in classrooms, on campuses, and in communities worldwide.”
International Education Week encourage the participation of all individuals and institutions interested in international education and exchange activities, including schools, colleges and universities, embassies, international organizations, businesses, associations, and community organizations. Individuals and institutions tend to hold IEW events as it is convenient for them in their local communities.
However, the DOS’ Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is coordinating a number of events throughout the week to “emphasize the vital role of international education in diplomacy and foreign policy,” said a spokesman.
On November 12, at 9:30 a.m. at the National Press Club, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan and Allan Goodman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of International Education, will host a briefing on the 2013 Open Doors Report. The Open Doors Report is an annual survey that provides current data and outlines trends in international education.
Also on November 12, at the Liaison Capitol Hill Hotel, Assistant Secretary Ryan will speak at the reception following the NAFSA: Association of International Educators’ Presidential Panel on the internationalization of college and university campuses. The Assistant Secretary will honor the presidents of the eight U.S. colleges and universities chosen as winners of NAFSA’s 2013 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization.
On November 13, the DOS’ EducationUSA network, in partnership with CollegeWeekLive, will host an International Students Day with a virtual college fair for international students. This free online event aims to promote U.S. higher education institutions and answers questions about U.S. universities’ admissions processes, program information, and student life in the United States.

On November 14, Assistant Secretary Ryan will host a Google+ Hangout on international education at 10:30 a.m. EST. This conversation with current U.S. and foreign exchange students will broadcast live on the DOS’ YouTube channel and Google+ page. Questions can be submitted in advance via Twitter to @ECA_AS by using #IEW2013.
International Education Week is also providing promotional materials that allow educators and institutions the flexibility to promote events whenever they may be planned.
