SMART flex™ Ready To Reduce Costs and Make Control of Multiple Interactive Displays Easier

• Hardware and software solution controls five to ten displays with one computer
• Lowers total cost of ownership through hardware, electricity and support savings
• Simplifies technology infrastructure while maximizing impact of classroom technology

Calgary, Alberta — January 15, 2014 — From a leading global provider of interactive displays comes a new solution designed to reduce costs and make management of multiple displays easier. SMART Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: SMT) (TSX: SMA) announces SMART flex centralized computing platform, a combination of hardware and software that enables control of up to ten interactive displays with just one computer. (Controls up to five on Windows operating systems, ten on Linux). Traditionally, school districts use one computer or laptop for each interactive display.

The SMART flex centralized computing platform works by connecting the flex client hardware to a single computer (host PC). Each SMART flex hardware client is then connected to a SMART interactive display to allow multiple collaborative learning stations to run from the processing power of a single computer, without sacrificing traditional PC functionality and performance. The SMART flex software is installed only on the host PC with nothing to install or maintain on the SMART flex hardware clients. Since software updates are only required on the host PC, the overall maintenance and operating cost of SMART flex is much less than traditional computing solutions, with savings in hardware, IT department labor and electricity. For added convenience and ease-of-use, the SMART flex hardware is compact, measuring 4.7 inches x 3.1 inches x 1.1 inches (120 mm x 80mm x 28 mm). For more information visit
“School districts around the world are coping with limited budgets while trying to get the most benefit from classroom technology,” says Greg Estell, President, Education, SMART Technologies. “With SMART flex centralized computing platform, districts can significantly reduce the costs of operating interactive displays and devote more resources to technology that engages students and improves learning outcomes.”

• Compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems
• Controls up to five interactive displays on Windows OS, ten on Linux
• Reduces computer hardware needs, simplifies infrastructure
• Teacher’s laptop or computer no longer required to support interactive display
• Compact size: 4.7” x 3.1” x 1.1” (120 mmx 80 mm x 28 mm)
• Future proof – SMART flex has up to 10 year lifespan, twice that of traditional computers
