Walpole, MA (April 8, 2014) – TEC Connections Academy (TECCA) Commonwealth Virtual School, the state’s newest full-time, tuition-free virtual public school for students in grades K–12 across Massachusetts, is now accepting applications for enrollment for the 2014-15 school year* and has begun the search for a highly-qualified and experienced individual to lead as the school’s executive director. As a public school, TECCA is available tuition-free to students in grades K–12 across Massachusetts.
The school, which was approved to open by the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and is sponsored by The Education Cooperative (TEC), will open this August and can initially enroll up to 1,000 students from anywhere in the state. Families interested in learning more are invited to attend an online or in-person information session – a complete list of events will soon be available on the school’s website.
TECCA will combine Massachusetts-certified teachers, an award-winning curriculum, technology tools, engaging electives, and social experiences to create a supportive and successful online learning program for families and students who want an individualized approach to education. As a public school, there are no fees or tuition to attend and all students are required to take the same state assessments as traditional school students.
“We are excited to expand the school choice options available in Massachusetts with a new high-quality virtual public school,” said Dr. Peter Sanchioni, Board Chair of TECCA. “Families in Massachusetts can trust TECCA to provide a comprehensive education experience where students thrive academically and personally and graduate prepared for college, career, and life. I encourage families interested in our school to attend an information session to get a feel for what’s involved in online learning.”
TECCA is governed by a board of trustees composed of Massachusetts residents and its curriculum and other services are contracted through Connections Education, a leading provider of high-quality, highly accountable online learning. The board of trustees is responsible for hiring the school’s executive director, who will work from a teaching facility in Walpole, to manage the school operations and provide leadership to create an exceptional virtual school for students statewide.
All TECCA students will participate in the nationally accredited Connections Academy program that combines high-quality resources from leading publishers with cutting-edge, yet easy-to-use, technology tools and hands-on materials. Learning from home, students will work closely with licensed Massachusetts teachers using detailed daily lesson plans that can be personalized to meet individual student needs. A parent, or another adult “Learning Coach,” monitors progress in the home.
Virtual school serves a wide variety of students, including those who are significantly ahead or behind in the classroom, those who need a flexible schedule or learn at a different pace from their peers, and those who need more individualized attention or live in rural settings. Homebound and previously home-schooled students can also thrive in TECCA’s program.
