For more than a decade schools and districts across the country have been embracing and engaging students in learning 21st century skills and the 4Cs (critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity). Today EdLeader21, the professional learning community for leaders committed to 21st century education, is making available a new, nationally-vetted set of rubrics designed to support school and district efforts to integrate 4Cs assessment.
The rubrics were developed to fulfill a need expressed by educational leaders to help integrate the 4Cs into K-12 education. More than 80 members of EdLeader21 and other experts spent two years developing and refining these rubrics in an effort to provide a tool that can be used in unique ways across subject areas, for professional development, as well as for Common Core implementation and other areas. The rubrics are designed for three grade level clusters: 3rd/4th grade, 7th/8th grade and 11th/12th grade.
“Any school district that wants to move 21st century education forward needs to have a common set of definitions for the 4Cs,” said Elizabeth Celania-Fagen, Superintendent, Douglas County School District (CO) and chair of EdLeader21’s PLC Advisory Committee. “The rubrics provide that structure and commonality. Our district has saved an incredible amount of time because the rubrics provide an excellent starting point for our 21st century implementation work.”
“We want to thank all of the EdLeader21 members and experts who have contributed their time and expertise to the development of the rubrics,” said EdLeader21 Chief Learning Officer Valerie Greenhill. “We could not have done this without their leadership and now schools and districts across the country will have an opportunity to benefit from these tools.”
“For the past decade we have been talking about how to teach 21st century skills and the 4Cs to students,” said EdLeader21 CEO Ken Kay. “The creation of these rubrics is an important milestone on this 21st century education journey. However, we at EdLeader21 will continue to build additional tools including the development of performance tasks.”
EdLeader21 will be hosting a webinar on Wednesday, April 30 at 3:00 PM ET/12:00PM PT about the rubrics and how they are being used in schools and districts. To register for the webinar go to http://tinyurl.com/EL21Rubrics. To learn more about EdLeader21 and the rubrics, visit www.edleader21.com.
