Presentations Focus on the Role of Data, Social Technology and Gaming in Education’s Future and the Ways Digital Curriculum Empowers Learners and Teachers

NEW YORK – June 9, 2014 – The power of technology to transform teaching and learning will be the focus of two Pearson “Spotlight Sessions” at ISTE 2014 in Atlanta later this month.

In the first session on Sunday, June 29, “The Digital Oceans in Education,” Kristen DiCerbo, Ph.D., Principal Research Scientist at Pearson, will explore the unprecedented opportunity that today’s educators have to use technology to understand learner activities in testing and non-testing environments. Using examples, such as SimCityEDU: Pollution Challenge!, DiCerbo will discuss new opportunities afforded by the “ocean” of digital data available from everyday learning activities.

Earlier this year, DiCerbo and her colleague John Behrens, Ph.D., Pearson’s vice president of Learning Analytics published a report, “Impacts of the Digital Ocean on Education,” detailing how data, social technology and gaming will all be at the forefront of education in the future. According to the report, with the increase in data accessibility, educators will be able to use existing digital teaching tools and techniques to better collect information about learners’ activities in testing and non-testing environments. The end result is a better understanding of a learner’s knowledge and skills, which can help determine the next best step in learning for an individual.

On Monday, June 30, at the second session, “Power to the Teachers,” a panel of innovative educators will explore the power of technology to bring teaching and learning alive through an integrated system of rigorous tasks, social cognition, formative assessment and standards-based professional development that ultimately can change the culture of the classroom. The session will showcase the Pearson System of Courses, the only K-12 digital curriculum that is a carefully constructed sequence of texts and tasks developed to prepare K-12 leaders for college and career.
