Adobe seeks youth media projects about social change

Fourth annual Adobe Youth Voices Awards adds Venture category to mentor promising change-makers and fund their campaigns

youth-awardsThe Adobe Foundation announced its call for entries for the fourth-annual international Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) Awards. The AYV Awards recognizes insightful digital media projects created by youth ages 13 to 19 designed to drive awareness of important social issues around the world, such as the environment, human rights and self-image. Last year’s winning projects covered topics such as bullying, diversity, hunger, and human loss due to texting and driving.

The competition accepts entries in categories representing four visual storytelling methods: Documentary, Animation, Narrative and Visual Composition, which includes photography and graphic design. Winning projects will receive grants to support a nonprofit of their choice, hardware and Adobe software.

New this year is a fifth category, Venture, which is an invitation for five-minute video submissions that pitch a solution to a social problem. Youth are asked to propose a plan for implementing the solution over a year’s time and illustrate the expected impact. Venture winners will receive funding, hardware, Adobe software and mentorship from Ashoka’s Youth Venture to support the execution of their proposed plan.

Youth ages 13 to 19 can participate by teaming with an adult educator who is a registered member of the AYV Community, an online source for free curricula and tools supporting the creation of digital content in an academic context. Educators from schools or youth organizations may register with the AYV Community at no cost. Entries must be submitted by the educators on behalf of youth participants.

The submission deadline for content produced from 2012-2014 is March 9, 2015. Projects produced in 2015 must be submitted by April 20, 2015.

Complete entry guidelines are available on the official competition website, youthvoices.adobe.com/awards/submissions

From all eligible entries, 10 finalists will be selected in each of the five categories. Finalist entries will be showcased on the AYV Awards website May 11-June 15. During this period, an international panel of professionals working in visual arts, film, animation and other creative fields will select first, second, and third-place winners in each category. Projects will be judged based on story and message, creativity and style, and production quality.

The public is invited to view and vote for favorite finalist project submissions. Entries generating the highest audience votes in each category will receive an Audience award.
