Virtual conference focuses on 13 digital literacies

Annual event on Oct. 24 has virtual and in-person components

13-literaciesDiscovery Education will host another annual virtual conference for educators later this month, featuring live presentations from various educators across the continent. Fall VirtCon, as it’s known to distinguish it from a spring counterpart, will take place on Oct. 24.

Centered around a theme of “Literacies for the Digital Age,” the event will take a deep dive into Kathy Schrock’s 13 Literacies for the Digital Age, which empower educators with instructional strategies to prepare students to become well-rounded 21st-century citizens.

Each session will feature a different speaker and cover one of the 13 literacies in depth. Hall Davidson will discuss media literacy and Steve Dembo will tackle digital literacy, with various Discovery-affiliated educators covering the rest (a complete schedule is available online).

“I was flattered when Discovery Education decided to base the Fall VirtCon on my series of  blog articles about the digital literacies I have identified as important for students to acquire,” Schrock told eSchool News. “For the Fall VirtCon, I provide a quick overview of each literacy to set the stage. I am excited to see what each of the presenters shares to build upon the basic tenets of the literacies. I am sure I will learn lots of new things as the presenters introduce the audience to their successful practices!”

Viewing parties and in-person events will also take place across the U.S. and Canada. Last year, the conference attracted 2,900 attendees who participated online and at 41 in-person events.
