Free virtual field trip celebrates Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday

‘Happy Birthday, Your Majesty’ features a tour of Windsor Castle and discussion of the British Monarchy

To celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, Discovery Education is hosting a free virtual field trip for students around the world for an exploration of the life of the U.K.’s longest-reigning sovereign.

The event, called ‘Happy Birthday, Your Majesty,’ will take place on June 10 at 9:30 A.M. EST. Hoested by British television presenters Diane Louise Jordan and Joe Crowley, it transport students to Windsor Castle, the family home of British  kings and queens for nearly 1,000 years.

Suitable for students of all ages, this engaging, interactive broadcast will examine important moments in the Queen’s life and reign, shine a light on her role in the British constitution, and explore the monarchy’s connection to the Commonwealth of Nations, a voluntary association of 53 countries that includes former colonies, such as Canada and Australia.

The event will also feature a glimpse inside Windsor Castle’s famous State Apartments, a performance by the Choristers of St George’s Chapel, and a collaborative writing experience featuring students in the U.K., Canada, and India. This public opening of Windsor Castle, which is one of the official residences of Her Majesty The Queen, is managed by Royal Collection Trust.

The event will be streamed live on Discovery Education’s website, and schools can register online. Schools watching live are encouraged to participate by submitting questions online via Twitter using the hashtag #HMQ90TeaParty.  An archive of the event will be available for viewing after the event.

“I’m looking forward to utilizing this virtual field trip to deepen my students’ understanding of Queen Elizabeth II’s life and legacy,” said Dacia Jones, educator at North Carolina’s Durham Public Schools. “This memorable digital experience will transport my students to Windsor Castle – a place where they might otherwise never be able to go — and connect them to a global community of their peers.”

“This unique virtual field trip gives students everywhere the opportunity to be involved in Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday celebrations,” said Kelli Campbell, senior vice president and digital learning officer at Discovery Education. “The program will shine a light on the important role she has played in history during her lifetime, and help teachers bring learning to life in a way that no textbook can.”
