New framework guides ESSA state accountability systems

Accountability symposium for state education agency leaders will highlight new continuous improvement accountability framework

AdvancED has developed a new accountability framework focused on continuous improvement to help states create a more inclusive, learner-centric education accountability system.

To support states with their improvement efforts, AdvancED will host an ESSA Accountability Symposium in Chicago on Thursday, June 23 where it will unveil its accountability framework. The symposium will be held for select forward-thinking state education agency (SEA) leaders to collaborate and receive expert guidance and support as they prepare to design their state accountability systems.

Under the Every Student Succeeds Act which replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act, states have until January 2017 to submit their plans to the U.S. Department of Education for how they will design their state education accountability system. Several states have sought assistance from AdvancED, the world’s leading expert in school improvement and accreditation services, which recently released a whitepaper, Designing State Accountability Systems for Continuous School Improvement: A Call to Action, on the subject. During the invitation-only event, AdvancED experts will counsel and provide thought leadership to help state education leaders design accountability systems that will drive improvement for every learner, teacher, leader and community.

“Just because the runway is short to get this done doesn’t mean state leaders should barrel down the runway without a plan,” said Dr. Mark Elgart, president and CEO of AdvancED. “We want to help state education agencies and accountability leaders thoughtfully plan, design and implement their ESSA accountability systems with a learner-centric focus and systemic structure to promote and ensure continuous improvement.”

With the enactment of ESSA, states are seeking assistance and a framework that will help them design and structure a cohesive accountability system in the best interest of students while complying with the new law. Most state leaders could benefit from a shared conversation and access to the customizable AdvancED Accountability Framework.

More than an opportunity to collaborate and learn how other states are challenged by and leading their accountability efforts, participants will emerge from the symposium with a framework document that will help them move forward with designing a continuous improvement-focused accountability system in their home state. This is an opportunity for state education agency leaders to both benefit from and contribute to transforming the next generation of accountability in this country.
