The Nutrients for Life Foundation, an educational nonprofit that teaches students and the public about the vital role soil nutrients play in feeding our world, and Discovery Education, provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced the launch of the 2016-2017 “Let it Grow Contest.” Returning a second year, this contest is part of the multi-year engagement program, From the Ground Up: The Science of Soil, which offers middle school students, educators and families nationwide a comprehensive suite of standards-aligned digital resources designed to deepen students’ understanding of the importance of soil science and nutrients in today’s agricultural practices. pivotEd, Capstone’s newest digital curriculum offering, is proud to announce its free, three-part leadership webinar series, “Structures for Success: Accelerate Learning in the Digital Rich Classroom.” The series highlights practical strategies for administrators to integrate technology into upper elementary classrooms while supporting instruction and creating a bridge to fuller understanding. The series begins October 6, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. CST with Building a Strong Foundation for Launch. Read more.

PBS LearningMedia rolled out significant new teaching tools today as part of the Election Central site, which provides curated information to teach K-12 students about the election process in a safe, ad-free and non-partisan environment. d’Vinci created both the K-12 content and the technology in collaboration with PBS. With the new interactive, the Electoral Decoder, middle and high school students learn about the impact of the Electoral College. Students explore the topic through an introductory video about the Presidential election process, an interactive timeline for all of the 57 past Presidential elections and a “Presidential Predictor” area for the current election. Helios Education Foundation announced a $1.6 million investment awarded to Orlando Repertory Theatre, in partnership with Orange County Public Schools and Arizona State University, to provide dual language learning opportunities to Voluntary Pre-K students in 11 Orlando-area classrooms. Students in these classrooms will receive instruction 50 percent of the time in English and 50 percent of the time in Spanish, culminating in dual language comprehension and fluency. Read more.

A family-centered, school-based intervention in pre-kindergarten programs developed at NYU Langone Medical Center, known as ParentCorps, has a positive and lasting impact on mental health and academic performance, according to new research published online October 3 in JAMA Pediatrics. A study of close to 800 low-income black and Latino children enrolled in pre-k in New York City public schools found that children who attended programs with ParentCorps had fewer behavioral and emotional problems at school and greater academic performance through second grade. ThinkCERCA, provider of personalized literacy solutions, today announced the launch of Teach the Election, an online information hub that features everything educators need to get students thinking critically about the 2016 election. The site provides teachers with weekly prompts for helping students debate what the candidates are saying in the news, as well as curated differentiated lessons for educating students about the election issues.
