It’s no secret that a teacher’s workday doesn’t end when the last school bell of the day rings. The same can be said for summer–many teachers keep learning over the summer and pursue PD opportunities to improve their instruction for the next class of students.
If you haven’t identified a summer PD workshop or opportunity, we’ve gathered a list of some that might interest you. From neuroscience and reading and writing to math education, STEM and innovative school leadership, you’re likely to find something that grabs your attention.
But act quickly–some programs have wait lists and others have application deadlines that are quickly approaching.

1. Learning and the Brain Summer Institutes
Learning and the Brain summer institutes cover a variety of topics that link neuroscience and education. Institutes that still have open registration include the power of positive mindsets in school climates, using mindsets and metacognition for student success, and neuroscience and classroom engagement.
2. STEM Education for Girls Think Tank and Conference
STEM Education for Girls will host its next STEM Think Tank and Conference July 12-14, 2017. This year’s theme is Disrupting Silos: Creating STEM Habits of Mind. Areas of focus include partnerships for change, STEM+, social entrepreneurship and public purpose, and computer science. The Think Tank and Conference will bring together national leaders in K12 education for girls and young women (independent, public, charter, and parochial), university K12 outreach coordinators and researchers, STEM university faculty, girls’ informal educators, and members of industry.
3. The Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning Summer Workshop Series
The Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning promotes innovative, research-driven teaching that develops each student’s potential as a learner. At its core, the CTTL believes that exceptional teachers know how the brain learns. The CTTL is offering three workshops in June, focusing on neuroeducation, innovation and design thinking, and diversity.
4. The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education
Founded in 1981, The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education provides aspiring and experienced school leaders from across the country and around the world with exemplary professional development to meet personal and professional challenges. Programs include Leadership: An Evolving Vision and School Turnaround Vision.

5. EdTechTeacher2017 Summer Workshops
Popular summer workshops include iPads in the Elementary Classroom, Virtual Reality in the Classroom, Creating Innovators Design Thinking & Maker Spaces, Elementary and Advanced GSuite Google Classroom, and Inquiry & Project Based Learning.
6. The Stanford Summer Teaching Institute
The Stanford Summer Teaching Institute is an annual four-day symposium focused on the development of educators. The institute offers workshops in a range of areas, including teaching tools that can be used at all content and grade levels, innovative pedagogical practices, and ways to manage student learning. All courses offer opportunities to practice new methods, and time to design learning materials for individual classrooms, as well as time to connect (and reconnect) with colleagues. Courses include cross-content PD, ELA, history/social studies, math, and science.
7. AP Workshops and Summer Institutes
College Board-endorsed AP Summer Institutes have signed an agreement with the College Board to ensure quality and consistency among the locations. These courses are always led by College Board–endorsed consultants and provide College Board materials to each participant.
8. ASCD Conference on Teaching Excellence

9. NSTA Summer Institute 2017
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are bringing about transformative changes in teaching and learning at every level. To help K–12 teachers, as well as school and district leaders, make this important transition, NSTA offers a one-day institute that explores the shifts in the NGSS and offers strategies for adjusting teaching approaches, making important cross-curricular connections, assessing curriculum, and assessing student learning. Sessions are led by national NGSS experts and differentiated by grade and disciplines. Information on specific program strands follow.
10. The Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College
For over 30 years, educators have come together at Teachers College for summer institutes on the teaching of reading and writing. Well over 170,000 teachers have attended our week-long institutes. Teachers College offers two five-day institutes on the Teaching of Reading and two five-day institutes on the Teaching of Writing. The reading and writing institutes are taught back to back, first in June/July and then again in August. This year, Teachers College is offering two additional summer writing institutes: one in Barcelona and one in Connecticut.
