summer learning loss

Free online resources to help address “summer slide”

Educators expect the summer slide to be profound this year due to the pandemic

Miacademy.co, the online homeschooling website, is proud to collaborate with ASU in offering fun, free online resources to help address “summer slide,” the loss of academic mastery during weeks away from the classroom. Many educators expect this to be profound this year, on top of the missed weeks this spring due to the pandemic, which creates their own loss of academic proficiency.

As part of ASU’s commitment to supporting parents by providing free educational resources, ASU created https://asuforyou.asu.edu/miacademy where parents can find hundreds of original teaching videos covering every K-8 grade level across every core subject.

Each of these educational videos forms part of a learning module on Miacademy.co, where student members can practice what they’ve learned, use online simulations, complete graded assessments, and work through related offline activities independently or together with family members. As an ASU For You learning partner, Miacademy is offering these videos, aligned to Arizona learning standards, free to Arizona families and all online learners. “I’m proud that Miacademy was chosen as a partner by one of the most prestigious online education providers in the U.S.,” says Dr. Johannes Ziegler, CEO of Miacademy. “With so many types of learners and so many different ways to learn, we are continuously building and improving a network of partners that help expand our reach and influence. We are excited to work with Miacademy in this effort. Their position in the learning ecosystem is unique and their contributions to ASU for You are powerful,” says Kimberly Merritt, Managing Director of ASU Learning Enterprise.

Miacademy videos on ASU For You address academic needs across all elementary and middle-school ages. A first-grader, for example, might enjoy learning about Forest Animals or Zoo Animals:

A fourth-grader may need some math review, such as the Fractions Operations Overview (handy for parents too!)

Each of Miacademy’s teaching videos is written and produced by professional educators together with experienced homeschoolers. The Miacademy team keeps all learners in mind, including those with special needs, as they create the online curriculum.

Curriculum Team Leader Ashley Newman describes creating Miacademy teaching videos as “one of my favorite things to do.” As a former special education teacher, Newman knows how to support a variety of learners and uses these strategies to direct the creation of Miacademy videos. “If we use high-level vocabulary, we define it and also display it on the screen. When teaching math approaches, we explain more than one way to solve a problem, so the student can choose which to use.” Newman homeschools her own children with Miacademy. “Miacademy videos are clear, concise, and to the point. They keep the child’s attention. They’re specific to one topic or skill. I don’t have to watch through an hour-long video to find what is useful to my child.” (Learn more about Ashley here: https://parents.miacademy.co/help/about)

The full Miacademy Learning experience includes creative, collaborative educational opportunities including a student newspaper, business simulation, digital village with a personal castle and design studio, user-submitted videos, and optional peer communication moderated by veteran homeschool educators. Arizona parents wanting to enroll their children in Miacademy can use the coupon code ASUFORYOU at https://parents.miacademy.co/#codeInput to for up to 40% off memberships.

Writes Miacademy mom Jennifer, “Miacademy Learning, thank you! I have been a home educator for our three kids since 2011 — one has since moved on and finished college, one is a senior, and my youngest, 11, schools with Miacademy — it is the first online program that I really love! Keep up the great work!”

The Miacademy team has been serving homeschool families for over a decade. Learn more about Miacademy’s leadership, vision, and the team at https://parents.miacademy.co/help/about
