Innovate to Educate Entry

Fresno County Office of Education

Brigeen Houghton, Library Coordinator

What innovative technology initiative or project are you most proud of, and how has it improved teaching and learning in your school/district?

We created a website for the books in our library that encourages students to read high quality books by providing them with audio, video, images, and written descriptions about their favorite titles; and then gives them suggestions about what to read next. Students, parents, and teachers can preview can preview our books by interest level.

What were some of the biggest challenges to your initiative, and how did you meet those challenges?

We wanted to create a web space that is inviting and kids and constantly being refreshed with latest award winning books. So, we had to be sure the Reading in Action is easy to use and visually engaging. We also have had to commit to uploading new books every week which makes our library staff a staff of active readers!

What are the three biggest components that need to be in place for tech innovation to succeed are:

For ed-tech to be innovative in education it must add value to each student's individual learning experience.
Must be easy to use.
Fit seamlessly into a student's regular day at school.
