Primavera Online High School

Wendy Brooks, Content Strategist

What innovative technology initiative or project are you most proud of, and how has it improved teaching and learning in your school/district?

As the curriculum department for Primavera Online High School, StrongMind is developing a high-caliber, rigorous and immersive digital curriculum that is taking online learning to a new level to engage students and empower teachers. Our team of highly-skilled education, instructional, technology and creative experts incorporate multimedia and interactive elements such as video, formative assessments, games and teacher-led lessons into each course. StrongMind curriculum has won five Regional Emmys, a CODiE, five Tellys and a Serious Play award.

What were some of the biggest challenges to your initiative, and how did you meet those challenges?

A challenge we continually welcome is presenting rigorous and relevant content in a way that truly supports the 20,000+ students that Primavera serves each year. This includes evolving formats to help prevent cognitive overload, pushing the boundaries in mediums like video and games that resonate with adolescents, and advancing our technology platform (Student Information System, Learning Management System, Parent-Student Portal) to enable a seamless and intuitive learning experience in the online classroom.

What are the three biggest components that need to be in place for tech innovation to succeed are:

Engaging Content: Coursework must be rigorous and aligned AS WELL AS relevant, immersive and interesting for 21st century learners to succeed in today's quickly changing world.
Seamless Technology: An online classroom needs to deliver digital coursework in an intuitive and appealing way while fostering continuous interaction between between teacher and student.
Empowered Teachers: Online learning solutions must empower teachers with content that inspires, tools that enable individualized student support and technology that automates administrative tasks.
