Digital student magazine broadens engineering’s appeal

The American Society for Engineering Education has launched a free, online, interactive version of "eGFI-Engineering: Go For It," its magazine intended to inspire middle and high school students to consider engineering careers. The new digital magazine features examples of engineering innovations that are transforming society, profiles of dynamic undergraduates who want to make a difference, and descriptions of the most popular engineering career paths and disciplines. Using Zmags technology, eGFI lets students flip electronically through each page. Most of the articles have corresponding videos that make engineering come alive. When students turn to a story on alternative energy, for example, they can watch a video explaining technologies that generate wind power, including a propeller-free personal windmill that can be set up in crowded urban areas. Students also can search through articles and can share pages with friends via eMail, Facebook, Twitter, or other social media sites. Besides the online magazine, the newly expanded eGFI package includes a web site, blog, and biweekly electronic newsletter for math and science teachers, offering lesson plans, activities, and features on teachers who are bringing excitement to their classes through engineering. http://www.egfi-k12.org
