School grants offer much-needed financial help for schools

Gift cards for prize-winning student essays

The “A Book That Shaped Me” Summer Writing Contest is administered as part of summer reading programs at participating public libraries in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Top winners will be honored during a ceremony at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Oct.18, 2014. All students who enter the contest can redeem a free contest prize pack at the Library of Congress National Book Festival, which will take place Aug. 30, 2014 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Students entering 5th and 6th grades in the fall of 2014 are eligible. Essays, focused on a single book, should be one page in length and must be submitted with an entry form, in person, at participating public library locations.

$100K in projector technologies

Administrators and faculty of public or private schools throughout the United States can enter for a chance to win a Casio Ultra Short Throw projector for their school worth $2,000. One winner will be selected in each state.

$8K for K’NEX experts

Children can enter using the online entry form found on the K’NEX website, www.knexperts.com. Submissions must include up to 3 photos of the creation, and a short video or one-page summary describing how the child came up with the idea, how long the design took to build, and how many K’NEX pieces were used.

$10K and national recognition for school superintendents

Now in its 28th year, the AASA National Superintendent of the Year Program pays tribute to the talent and vision of the men and women who lead our nation’s public schools. This program is sponsored by Aramark, VALIC and AASA. Any superintendent, chancellor or top leader of a school system in the United States who plans to continue in the profession may be nominated. This program is designed to recognize the outstanding leadership of active, front-line superintendents. Each applicant must contact his or her state association to inquire about the selection process, and application deadlines. Timelines vary from state to state.
