8 little-known video resources popular with teachers

OpenEd compiled this list of resources after reviewing teacher video use

video-resourcesThe use of video in education is growing by leaps and bounds. Videos are used in classrooms to support student learning, they play a critical role in flipped learning, and they also figure prominently in teacher professional development.

One of the best parts about educational videos? Educators can usually find a free high-quality video to suit any number of needs.

OpenEd, creator of an online library of free and open K-12 resources, recently analyzed the use of videos in its resource library. Eight video publishers appeared as lesser-known — that is to say, you’re probably not on a first-name basis with them — but still popular among teachers.

The eight video publishers emerged as resources that teachers frequently assign. Those publishers include:

1. Have Fun Teaching: Need a video on the alphabet, characters, counting, grammar, math, science, and more? The Have Fun Teaching site offers videos in a variety of learning categories.

2. TeacherTube Math: This video resource covers fractions, multiplication, and math from the elementary level up through college.

3. WordWorld: WordWorld is a preschool series where words are the stars of the show. Users follow Duck and his lovable, legible WordFriends—animals, whose bodies are made up of the letters that spell the word they are. Word building reinforces the pre-reading concept that letters (and their sounds) make words, and that words have real meaning. WordWorld also introduces essential emergent literacy concepts—such as sounding out letters, “chunking” words, and rhyming—that all children encounter as they learn to read.

4. Learning Games for Kids: These preschool and kindergarten videos run the gamut from color, the alphabet, letter sounds, counting, science, and science experiments.

5. Complabteacher: This video resource features more than 4,000 educational videos with more than 8 million views.

6. Time4Writing: Time4Learning provides online preschool lessons, online elementary curriculum, and online middle school curriculum for reading, writing and arithmetic as well as social studies and sciences.

7. Discovery Education: Free teacher resources include videos on a wide range and variety of subjects.

8. Educator: This site covers topics such as biology, physics, test prep, computer programming, and more.
