Competency-based education: A survey of educational institutions on their journey to CBE
Lately, many of the institutions we work with have been expressing an interest in competency based education (CBE), a learning approach that focuses on a learner’s ability to demonstrate
measurable proficiency in a subject. Another characteristic of CBE is that it offers learners the
opportunity to acquire an education in a manner that’s flexible in terms of time, place, and pace.
Given the high cost of a higher education, increasing workplace demands for a workforce with
the right knowledge and skills to succeed in the 21st century, and the need for ongoing, lifetime
learning, it’s no surprise that so many colleges and universities are beginning to explore CBE.
