Oakland Unified School District chooses Google for a personalized learning platform

John will discuss why the district decided to go Google and how they planned for a successful rollout of Google Education tools.

The District is committed to providing a superior education for all its students, and has deployed Google Apps for Education accounts for all 48,000 K-12 students and over 8,000 Chromebooks for grades 3 through 12.OUSD selected Dell Chromebook 11 laptops to “give all students access to a reliable wireless device” and to “meet the state requirements for online assessment.” With Chromebooks, OUSD’s IT staff can easily deploy and remotely manage the devices, and setting them up for Smarter Balanced (SBAC) or PARCC assessments takes just minutes. Hear all about their experience using Chromebooks for SBAC testing and for teaching and learning in the classroom.

MarkRenne120Mark Renne is an Education Specialist at Google, whose mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Mark helps large school districts in the Western United States use web-based instruction and adopt web-based tools. He works with superintendents, technology and curriculum departments to give students access to the web and a world of resources. He has been involved in educational technology for over 20 years.As an early cloud evangelist, Mark helped drive the creation and adoption of web-based email first across the United States and then around the world. Mark has previously held positions at Salesforce.Com, Microsoft, Xerox and IBM. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Computer Science.
John Krull, Information Technology Officer, Oakland Unified School District
image01John is currently the Information Technology Officer at Oakland Unified School District. As a cabinet member, he works closely with the Superintendent along with deputy and associate superintendents to set and implement strategies to make all Oakland students college, career, and community ready.John was previously the Chief Technology Officer at Fremont Unified School District (FUSD), a K-12 public school district with 4500 employees and 33,000 students. Before FUSD, John was the Vice President for Technology at Envision Education, a Bay Area charter management organization and consultancy.Previous to his career in education technology management, John worked for almost 10 years in technology management at Microsoft, Virage, and Autonomy.John began his career as an educator holding various teaching and technology leadership positions. John worked as an adjunct instructor at Seattle Pacific University teaching courses on technology to enhance and extend learning in the classroom. He is currently an adjunct instructor at UC Berkeley Extension. He earned a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Education from the University of Washington. He has certifications as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, a Network Operations Manager, and a Chief Technology Officer.
