School librarians are rising school leaders

Librarians play an important role as schools make the digital transition

librarians-leadersSchool librarians are shaking off the decades-old stereotype that they are isolated from a school’s teachers, students, and classrooms. Today’s school librarians, according to a panel discussion that took place during Connected Educator Month and on Connected Librarians Day, are being tapped as influential school leaders with the power to help support the digital transition.

“I see school librarians as school leaders, and I think it’s time for us to step up and be counted,” said Susan Ballard, former president of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL).

This offers great potential for interconnected partnerships.

This was a great kickoff panel in the Connected Librarians Day events hosted online. I enjoyed the panel and this review article…as well as a 3 hour session with Mark Ray today at WLMA conference in Yakima. Those LIT TL(Library and Information Technology Teacher-Librarians)are a remarkable lot.

School librarians have been the technology leaders in schools for decades (my first professor in library school was the gentleman who intergrated AV technology at Harvard in 1920). Personally, I’ve been the computer and Internet expert as well as the expert for other educational media in the schools I’ve worked in since 1980. It’s great that eSchool News is recognizing librarians as technology leaders, but this is nothing new to teachers and administrators in the world of education. However, it might be a big surprise to our nation’s business leaders to know librarians are technology leaders, so thanks for the article on librarians as technology leaders.

I wholeheartedly encourage library leader development! We have a great librarian/Teacher of the year in our district and she is nearing retirement but keeps us all on our toes. Who will follow in her footsteps?
