Innovate to Educate Entry

Prien Lake Elementary-Calcasieu Parish School Board

Misty Savario, ITEC/Tech Showcase 1st Grade Teacher

What innovative technology initiative or project are you most proud of, and how has it improved teaching and learning in your school/district?

I am Lead Elementary Impact teacher for our district. I am collaborating with our district's technology department to help train all 1st grade teachers in our district to use Digital learning centers. These digital activities will be aligned with 1st grade ELA CCSS and objectives. We will be teaching the teachers how to integrate technology using the SAMR model in their classroom and helping these teachers build activities that they can use with their students.

What were some of the biggest challenges to your initiative, and how did you meet those challenges?

The biggest challenges that I faced with my initiatives is that our school does not have a lot of up to date technology. We are not a Title 1 school so we do not have the funds to provide the newest technology to our students. After applying for many grants, I am now getting the newest technology in my classroom and it has motivated others teachers to apply for grants now.

What are the three biggest components that need to be in place for tech innovation to succeed are:

Always finding new ideas to use in the classroom.
Collaborating with other tech teachers.
Listening to your students to find out what works and what doesn't work.
