Supporters of Oregon's online charter schools packed a legislative hearing April 1 to protest proposed limits on virtual education, reports the Statesman Journal of Salem, Ore. State lawmakers said they did not foresee the explosion in online programs, some operated by out-of-state companies, when they wrote the state's charter school law in 1999. Oregon currently has 4,000 students enrolled in nine virtual charter schools. They receive state funds based on student enrollment.
