Gang Awareness Target of Vincennes University P.D. and Oxygen Education Collaboration

Indianapolis, Ind. – October 12, 2009 – Oxygen Education, LLC, a market leading developer of digital content for technical education and workforce development, today announced it has been selected by the Vincennes University Police Department (VUPD) to develop online training to teach school administrators, community leaders, and other police departments how to recognize and react to suspected gang activity. By combining the extensive knowledge of seasoned police officers with custom, interactive online content, the VUPD and Oxygen Education will build a solid understanding of the warning signs and dangers associated with gangs and improve the safety and security of the citizens of the State of Indiana.

Vincennes University is funding the collaboration with a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. “Understanding and responding to gang-related activity is an important skill that our community leaders need to learn,” said Jim Jones, chief of the Vincennes University Police Department. “Oxygen Education’s interactive course structure is an effective tool to deliver and cultivate the skills necessary for combating gang activity throughout our state.”
“Our course structure and quality development process make topics like these prime candidates for Oxygen Education,” said Mike Fitzgerald, president, Oxygen Education. “In partnering with the VUPD, the resources are now available to increase awareness of this important issue through online, interactive courseware.”

The National Gang Threat Assessment provided by the Department of Justice’s National Drug Intelligence Center reports that approximately 1 million gang members and 20,000 gangs were active in the United States during 2008. The assessment also estimates that criminal gangs commit up to 80 percent of the crime in many communities, including armed robbery, assault, automotive theft, drug trafficking, and more.
