How to avoid committing social media gaffes

Social media give school leaders an opportunity to interact with parents and other constituents on a more informal and interactive basis, but they should take care to remain professional.
Social media give school leaders an opportunity to interact with parents and other constituents on a more informal and interactive basis, but they should take care to remain professional.

Once primarily the purview of high school and college students, social media use is growing exponentially across all demographic groups, including senior citizens.

With social media use becoming more mainstream, principals, teachers, parent volunteers, and other adults affiliated with public schools are frequently using social media for networking and communication purposes. But while social media give school leaders an opportunity to interact with parents and other constituents on a more informal and interactive basis, don’t let the informal tone fool you.

A new superintendent who boasted online that he slept until 10 a.m. and surfed the internet on his first day under contract with his new employers recently became the subject of intense mainstream media scrutiny.…Read More

Schools still conflicted over Web 2.0 tools

Web 2.0 tools can help students develop critical 21st century skills.
Web 2.0 tools can help students develop critical 21st century skills, many say.

Many school systems have discovered that Web 2.0 tools such as blogging, social networking, and collaborative authoring software can help create participatory learning environments—but the gap between schools that have embraced these tools and those that have not is still large.

A new monograph from the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) profiles six school districts—Birdville Independent School District in Texas, New Canaan Public Schools in Connecticut, Michigan’s Westwood Cyber High School, Georgia’s Forsyth County Schools, Barrington 220 in Illinois, and White Oak Independent School District in Texas—and examines how those districts are using Web 2.0 tools to align school policies and practices with global education goals.

“Web 2.0 as a Force for School Transformation: A Tale of Six Districts,” part of the 2010 CoSN Compendium, contains profiles of each district, an overview of some of the Web 2.0 tools that each uses, and a librarian’s perspective on the role that school media centers play in adopting Web 2.0 strategies. The profiles also address filtering policies as they relate to Web 2.0 content.…Read More

Web search takes a social turn

Web sites are trying to make search more helpful by showing what your friends—or other people like you—like, reports the New York Times. Turning to friends is the new rage in the web world, extending far beyond established social networking sites and setting off a rush among web companies looking for ways to help people capitalize on the wisdom of their social circles—and to make some money in the process. Amazon.com now allows its shoppers to connect to their Facebook accounts so it can display their friends’ favorite books, films, and other products. TunerFish, a start-up owned by Comcast, lets users share what television shows and movies they are watching, mapping out an up-to-the-minute TV guide of programs gaining in popularity among their friends. And Loopt, a location-focused social network with 3.4 million registered users, recently began showing them which of their friends liked a particular restaurant. While user-contributed review sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor have long been popular ways to get a quick reading on a new place to eat, the sheer volume of reviews they offer can be overwhelming. And the reliability of those reviews can be hard to gauge. Some might have been planted by management, while others are from disgruntled customers with a bone to pick. The trust factor of friends’ suggestions can make a big difference…

New OSU social media network helps students connect

Classes don’t start for another three weeks at Oklahoma State University, but freshman Tandrea Lambert already has found dozens of future classmates with similar interests, reports NewsOK.com. Lambert met her new friends online through a social media network hosted by OSU. Technology is transforming the way new students connect with each other and their campuses. About 1,800 incoming OSU students from 48 states and eight countries have registered for OKStateU 1.0, a social media web site the university launched in May. The site serves as a communication tool that allows incoming students to share or receive information about campus programs and services across multiple platforms. Only incoming OSU students are allowed to register for the site. Students can create personal profiles and share photos, videos, schedules, and more. The site also gives students access to information about more than 200 events that will take place during Welcome Week, a fall welcome experience for new students. The site was designed to help students transition to college in a way that is comfortable to them, said Terrance Smith, a graduate student and an administrator for the site. Many students use social media networks, so they are familiar with the format, Smith said…

Online safety report discourages scare tactics

A federal online safety report issued recommendations for students, teachers, and parents.
A federal online safety report issued recommendations for students, teachers, and parents.

A federal online safety task force issued a report June 4, noting that the real world and the online lives of today’s students are overlapping. Although internet safety education is essential, the report says, scare tactics do little to influence the behavior of children and teenagers, who spend a large part of their lives on social networking sites, text messaging, and using other tech-based forms of communication.

Instead, the Online Safety and Technology Working Group (OSTWG), created by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, said that proper education about appropriate online behavior and digital media consumption can help children evaluate potential online risks. The group suggested that the government “promote nationwide education in digital citizenship and media literacy as the cornerstone of internet safety.”

Recommendations include creating a web-based clearinghouse of online safety education research, avoiding scare tactics, promoting digital citizenship at all grade levels, establishing industry best practices for effective internet safety education programs, and looking to young people as experts in the online and digital media arenas by involving them in risk-prevention education.…Read More
