Human Body: Pushing the Limits DVD Series from Discovery Education Honored with 2010 Teachers’ Choice Award

Silver Spring, Md. (Sept. 22, 2009) – Learning magazine has honored Discovery Education with a 2010 Teachers’ Choice Award for the Classroom, recognizing the value of the Human Body: Pushing the Limits DVD Series in teaching and learning.  Exploring the power and performance of the human anatomy, the Human Body: Pushing the Limits 4-pack DVD series engages students and educators in science education with 3D animation and real-world stories.

Produced by the Discovery Channel in 2008 and adapted for use by educators and students in grades 6-12 by Discovery Education, the Human Body: Pushing the Limits series is composed of four discs exploring Brainpower, Strength, Sensation, and Sight.  The Brainpower disc presents students six case studies of the body in crisis and examines how different parts of the brain can assist the body in overcoming tremendous obstacles.  3D animations illustrate exactly how the brain can alter the mind’s perception of time, while a review of current sleep research considers how we can influence our dreams.

The Strength disc helps students understand the capacities of human bones and muscle, highlighting the importance of adrenaline in triggering reactions during emergencies, and the Sensation disc introduces the body’s nervous system and explores how the brain and the nervous system work together to register sensation and coordinate the body’s reactions.  Case studies in the Sight disc help students gain a better understanding of the capacity of the eyes and brain to convert visual stimuli into images the mind can recognize.

"Pushing the Limits is a fine example of Discovery Education’s commitment to taking the best content from Discovery Communication’s family of networks and making it suitable for classroom use," said Kelli Campbell, Discovery Education Senior Vice President of Content and Product Development.  "Our team of curriculum specialists carefully reviewed this content, correlated it to academic standards and chaptered each program into core concept clips for classroom use.  Then, we created teacher’s guides for each program containing learning objectives, classroom discussion questions, suggested classroom activities, vocabulary lists, and more.  I’m grateful to Learning magazine for their recognition of Discovery Education’s efforts."

For more than a decade, the Learning magazine Teachers’ Choice Awards for the Classroom have heralded the very best in classroom-tested, teacher-recommended products.  Each year the program’s nationwide panel of teacher-judges names the standouts in books, classroom supplies, educational games, software, Web sites, and more.  For more information about the awards program and the winners of the 16th Annual Teachers’ Choice Awards for the Classroom, visit www.theeducationcenter.com.
