Texas State University-San Marcos Selects SunGard Higher Education to Help Improve Campus Services and Business Processes

MALVERN, Pa., Oct. 19, 2009 — Texas State University-San Marcos has chosen to use products and professionals from SunGard Higher Education to help build the institution’s next-generation digital campus. The project of implementing the Banner Unified Digital Campus will be supported by a team of project management and services specialists from SunGard Higher Education.

“We expect that the SunGard Higher Education Banner Unified Digital Campus solutions will help us significantly improve the student’s experience at Texas State, both through the increased functionality available to students online, as well as by enhancing the faculty’s and staff’s ability to better serve students’ needs,” said C. Van Wyatt, PhD, vice president for information technology. “By leveraging the best practices within Banner, we expect to increase the effectiveness and efficiencies of our business processes.”

The University licensed an array of Banner UDC solutions; namely Banner Student, Financial Aid, Enrollment Management Suite, Operational Data Store (ODS), Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), DegreeWorks and Document Management Suite solutions. Together the solutions will help the institution meet its goals of improving efficiencies, streamlining operations, furthering recruitment and retention efforts, and providing better constituent services.

“Banner will help us better serve our students by improving access to academic and administrative services, and by providing these services in a more personalized way. We anticipate that the portal feature of the system will be very popular with students as they conduct their business and will help strengthen our retention efforts,” said Michael Heintze, PhD, associate vice president for Enrollment Management and Marketing at the University.

In addition, the SunGard Higher Education Banner ODS and EDW, with their pre-built integration, higher education focus and content along with IBM Cognos tools, will help the University start developing a culture of high performance based on consistent access to accurate information. “We really like the fact that the EDW has a set of pre-configured reports and student cubes that will step up our reporting capabilities from day one,” said Mark Hughes, assistant vice president for Technology Resources. These solutions will help the University transition from simply gathering data to leveraging information.”

The University chose a fixed-fee model for project management, implementation, training and consulting services from SunGard Higher Education to better manage the final overall cost of the project. “The implementation of any large software project is always a complex process with opportunities for unforeseen problems,” said Joe Williams, Student System project manager. “By choosing a fixed fee implementation, Texas State has elected to transfer some of the risk involved to SunGard Higher Education to manage.  As a result, we hope to better manage the final overall cost of the project.”

“We worked hard to design the right implementation model and complete solution approach that met the institution’s high standards and economic needs,” said Brad Rucker, senior vice president, Services at SunGard Higher Education. “Texas State University is well known for its commitment to academic excellence and we look forward to being a part of continuing that legacy.”
