Loeffel said schools should be encouraged to maintain a focus on 21st-century skills even when the federal stimulus funding runs out.

“What happens when those resources are no longer available? Will we abandon whatever initiatives or progress we’ve begun?” he said. “You have to watch that and ask those questions.”

Marlin Equity Partners is a California-based private investment firm whose holdings include nearly a dozen other technology-based companies.

Based in Austin, Texas, CompassLearning says its software is used by 11 million students in 20,000 schools nationwide. Its flagship product, Odyssey, creates a personalized learning path for each student using flash-based activities to teach and review concepts. The software allows teachers to assess students’ performance, diagnose their strengths and weaknesses, and prescribe targeted instruction.
