What’s happening at SXSW EDU

Here's a quick look at some of the exciting events going on this week in Austin

I’m at SXSW EDU in Austin, Texas, for the first time in many years. People are running around, trying to take in as much as they can. This show, unlike any other I’ve attended, truly has something for everyone: sessions, competitions, exhibitors, movies, and more.

Whether you’d like to learn about Delivering on the Digital Promise or curious about The Ethics of VR in Education, there is a session for you. With topics ranging from learning spaces to early learning to leadership, there’s something for everyone at SXSW EDU.

If book signings are your thing, you have plenty to choose from; if you’re into movies, there are screenings taking place each afternoon and night. Do you DVR every episode of Shark Tank? Check out the fourth annual Student Startup competition and watch high school students pitch their business ideas.

One thing I’m looking forward to is watching mentors in action. More than 60 mentors are here—teachers, principals, and administrators—to offer one-on-one PD. Attendees sign up before the show to receive 15 minutes of advice on such topics as marketing, team development, or rolling out a learning management system.

I’m also eager to hear danah boyd‘s keynote on media literacy and listen to speakers from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Beyond Poetry describe how they’re working to remove barriers to equity and access in arts learning.

More than anything, I’m looking forward to meeting and reconnecting with teachers, district leaders, venture capitalists, administrators, and edtech vendors to talk about what’s happening in K-12 and how eSchool News can share their stories.
