Facts about the rise of the maker movement

Electronics maker company littleBits has created a new infographic, in collaboration with Getting Smart, designed to show the rise of the maker movement and its explosive growth, which has become a worldwide phenomenon.
Some takeaways:
- Maker faires –“part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new” — can be found on every continent and region on Earth, although most are concentrated in Europe and North America.
- This year, more than a million attendees are expected at maker faires. In 2006, there were only 22,000.
- More than 1,100 hackerspaces and 400 fab labs are open around the world.
- In 2014, President Obama declared June 18 as the National Day of Making, later expanded to a Week of Making.
- The growth of the movement is attributable to a perfect storm of economic, social, and technological factors, such as simple DIY making tech and potential business opportunities.
