International Minecraft competition launches for students

Minecraft event is first in series of Builder Bowl tournaments

minecraft-tournamentIn a nod to the game’s growing popularity among makers and builders of all ages, the Immersive Education Initiative is launching the first in a series of competitive international “builder” tournaments, focused on Minecraft.

Students and schools will compete against each other–virtually, and from home–with the championships taking place during the immersive technology conference IMMERSION 2015 in Paris this September.

Dubbed “the Super Bowl of Building,” Builder Bowl tournaments won’t always revolve around Minecraft. They’ll also feature various immersive technologies, including virtual reality, augmented reality, simulations, video games, caves and domes, 3D printing, and robotics. (Augmented reality will also be a focus of the first tournament).

While the IEI did not tip its hat as to what students might be asked to build during the competition, the Minecraft portion of its website lists various creations that can be constructed in the game, including roller coasters, electrical circuits, Rube Goldberg machines, and replicas of works of art.

Builder Bowl tournaments are governed by the Immersive Education Initiative and open to all Immersive Education (iED) clubs, camps, and classes. For information on upcoming tournaments or for details on how to start an iED club or camp, contact the Immersive Education Initiative.
