Opinion: The end of public education in America


In last night’s Republican debate, several of the candidates reiterated their resolve to get rid of the Department of Education if elected, says Angie Mohr for Yahoo! News. If you listened to most of the current Republican candidates, you might come away with the idea that the vast majority of the United States wants an end to public education. According to Republicans, education is better served up by the private sector, with each family receiving vouchers that they can use to “choose” their own type of education. In fact, the Republicans use the word “choice” freely when talking about trashing the Department of Education and letting corporations take over the schooling of our youth. It sounds good on the surface. The free market takes over in order to provide a superior education to our kids…
