Up to $400 for classroom projects from SONIC restaurants

From August 31 through October 1, customers who purchase a small-l through Route 44-sized fountain or frozen drink at SONIC, they can go online and vote for their favorite teacher’s classroom project. ICIF creates Michael Vergauwen Education Fund

InfoComm International’s foundation, the International Communications Industries Foundation (ICIF), created the Michael Verguwen Education Fund to recognize the career achievements of AV industry leader, Michael Vergauwen. Vergauwen, the COO of AVI Systems and officer of InfoComm International, died in an accident on June 28. 

The Michael Vergauwen Education Fund will foster educational opportunities, enhancing the audiovisual industry’s service to the public through scholarships, curriculum development, community engagement and the promotion of careers in the AV field. Proceeds from investing the fund will be used on an annual basis to create these new educational opportunities, while the balance will be maintained to continue to make investments in the industry on an ongoing basis.
 
The fund has set an initial target of $100,000 to begin the activities of the fund. Pearson Wins Iowa Student Record and Transcript Exchange System Project

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – July 30, 2009 – Pearson today announced the company has been awarded a contract from the state of Iowa for the Iowa Student Record and Transcript Exchange System project. At the center of the project is the National Transcript Center (NTC) provided by Edustructures, part of Pearson’s Assessment & Information group. Edustructures will oversee project implementation and ongoing support of the NTC solution, and will provide project management oversight for deployment of the web-based education portal provided by Choice Solutions. The Iowa Student Record and Transcript Exchange System project is a collaborative effort among four components of the Iowa education community, including the Iowa Department of Education (DE), Regent institutions, community colleges, and local school districts. The DE will serve as the facilitator of the project working with Edustructures for project delivery.

The Student Record and Transcript Exchange System is an expansion of the state’s Project EASIER (Electronic Access System for Iowa Education Records). The NTC solution—branded as the Iowa Transcript Center (ITC)—will facilitate the flow of student transcripts between Iowa high schools and postsecondary institutions as well as the flow of student records between Iowa school districts, thereby significantly reducing the workload of district administrators. This implementation also includes a permanent electronic transcript repository designed to provide a central location for all final high school transcripts. In addition, the project includes a secure, single sign-on, enterprise-grade web-based portal – branded as the Iowa EdFusion Portal – that can be used by school district personnel, postsecondary institutions and the DE to easily and quickly access transcripts.

The key goals of the project include:

·      Facilitating the ability to analyze and examine longitudinal data at the local, postsecondary, and state level for relationships and patterns that affect student progress and improvement

·      Ensuring portability of student school records by standardizing the data and automating the electronic transfer of student records when students move between  districts within the state of Iowa

·      Reducing the administrative burden for school districts by automating the secure delivery of an estimated 200,000 student transcripts to postsecondary institutions annually

·      Providing a secure, user-friendly, web-based portal that will serve the data accessibility needs of the citizens of Iowa, including parents, students, school districts, and postsecondary institutions

·      Delivering secure data accessibility that will assist the DE in meeting state and federal reporting requirements

Students Awarded ESRI Software in Geospatial Technology Section of SkillsUSA Championships

Redlands, California–Winning students in the Geospatial Technology competition, part of the National SkillsUSA Championships recently held in Kansas City, Missouri, were awarded prize packages that included ESRI’s ArcGIS software.

SkillsUSA was founded in 1965 as the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America with a mandate to provide formal leadership and training for high school students preparing for employment after graduation. It now includes college students in some sections. The program’s goal is to increase technical and vocational skills among young people to enhance their employment opportunities.

Timothy Hales from Central Piedmont Community College in North Carolina was the gold medalist in the geospatial technology competition and received a comprehensive ArcGIS software package that included ArcView and four extensions as well as a cash prize. Silver and bronze medalists Denver Dobbins and Rachel Harris, respectively, both from Central New Mexico Community College, also won ArcGIS software and cash awards.

All contestants submitted written proposals for a campus garden site suitability study based on the program developed by Digital Quest, Inc., which creates geographic information system (GIS) training courses and awards certifications recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. Solutions were developed using ArcGIS, and project findings were presented in both written and oral reports. Contestants were also required to take a written examination.

Eddie Hanebuth, president of Digital Quest, was instrumental in convincing the directors of SkillsUSA to include GIS in its program. Commenting on the competition, he said, "This contest is designed to be very difficult. The winner will have proven that they understand and can implement a full range of geospatial skills. This includes project management, software usage, map layouts, report writing, and data prep. The winner should prove to be a highly sought-after employee.

"As the economy forces both companies and institutions to put more emphasis on cost-cutting measures, geospatial technology is poised to be the go to technology. The ability to find geography-based cost reductions is unique to geospatial technology. Employers in both the private and government sectors are looking for ways to shave budgets, and geospatial technology can deliver. The future is bright for students and employees that can use geospatial technology wherever they are employed."

Dr. Tom Baker, ESRI’s education industry Internet manager and one of the competition judges, stated, "The level of ability exhibited by the participants in the Geospatial Technology contest was impressive. Computer firm bills NYC Ed Dept. some $250K per consultant

The computer firm that billed taxpayers an average of $250,000 last year for each of 63 full-time consultants it gave the New York City Department of Education appears to have paid those consultants just a fraction of that amount, reports the New York Daily News. Future Technology Associates (FTA) has held a no-bid contract from the city DOE for the past four years to integrate the school system’s financial management software with that of other city agencies. Under the contract, the company–which seems to have no other clients–received more than $15.7 million from the school system in fiscal year 2009. Since it began its work for the DOE, Future Technology Associates has filed 19 applications with the U.S. Department of Labor for permission to hire foreign workers under temporary H-1B visas. On those applications, it claimed to be paying those employees from $45,000 to $80,000, with the average at $65,000. Those salaries represent about one-fourth what FTA charged the city for those workers. As the Daily News reported last week, the company’s only official addresses, on Schermerhorn St. in New York City and its "headquarters" in Jacksonville, Fla., are mail drops. DOE officials defend the quality of FTA’s work. They say its rates are "better than competitive" when compared with the rest of corporate America…
