The Association of Latino Administrators & Superintendents (ALAS) has announced its new Region 3, Region 5 and At-Large State Affiliate board members.
They are:
Nora Gutierrez, Region 3 Southwest Board Member
Dr. Kristina Davis-Salazar, Region 5 Midwest Board Member
Dr. Lora de la Cruz, At-Large State Affiliate Board Member
Dr. Patricia Garcia, At-Large State Affiliate Board Member
“I am super excited to have these amazing leaders as the newest members of the ALAS Board,” said Dr. Maria Armstrong, executive director of ALAS. “I anticipate great work ahead for a Board that is committed to doing whatever it takes for the nation’s Latin/o/a/x leaders and the youth we serve.”
About the Board Members
Nora Gutierrez is superintendent of the Tolleson Union High School District in Arizona and serves on the board of the Arizona Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (AZALAS). Gutierrez previously served as ALAS’ At-Large State Affiliate Board Member and believes it is essential for states to have a voice on the ALAS board. When the need for regional representation was made available, she was nominated to serve and was honored to accept the appointment.
Dr. Kristina Davis-Salazar is superintendent of the West Chicago Elementary School District 33 and is a member of the Illinois Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (IALAS). Davis-Salazar believes it is both a challenge and a responsibility for educators to shed light on the culturally exclusive practices in the nation’s educational system and to lead changes that close opportunity gaps.
Dr. Lora de la Cruz is superintendent of the Lake Oswego School District in Oregon and is a member of the Oregon Association of Latino Administrators (OALA). de la Cruz is a graduate of ALAS’ Superintendent Leadership Academy Cohort 7 and her passion is shoring up practices to meet the needs of underrepresented students and families.
Dr. Patricia Garcia is superintendent of Geneva City Schools in New York and is a member of the New York State Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (NYSALAS). Garcia has a proven track record of academic excellence and a passion for creating equity and social justice through effective leadership, positive organizational change, and building high-performance teams.
The board members will work with the new ALAS executive board members Dr. Francisco Duraìn (board president), Dr. Gustavo Balderas (president-elect and director of Region 2 Northeast), Dr. Danna Diaz (secretary and director at large) and Dr. Alex Marrero (treasurer and director of Region 6 Northeast).
