SILVER SPRING, MD — Connecticut’s Jumoke Academy Charter School today announced a new partnership with Discovery Education, the worldwide edtech leader whose state-of-the-art digital platform supports learning wherever it takes place. This collaboration provides the educators at the Academy’s three campuses access to a suite of award-winning, digital resources that create enriching, real-world learning experiences and prepare scholars for citizenship in today’s culturally diverse, democratic society.
A public charter school system located in Hartford, Jumoke Academy serves approximately 675 pre-kindergarten through eighth grade scholars across three campuses. Noted civil rights leader, educator, and child advocate Thelma Ellis Dickerson founded the Academy in 1997 to prepare children to overcome any cultural, social, or economic challenge and successfully compete in the global marketplace.
Seeking a digital solution that would support deeper student engagement in social studies, the Academy reviewed several possible options. Following careful review, the Academy selected the following Discovery Education services for use across its three schools:
The Discovery Education platform.
Connecting educators to a vast collection of high-quality, standards-aligned content, ready-to-use digital lessons, intuitive quiz and activity creation tools, and professional learning resources, Discovery Education provides educators an enhanced learning platform which facilitates engaging, daily instruction in any learning environment.
Discovery Education’s team continues adding, contextualizing, and organizing exciting new content and timely and relevant resources to the platform each month in response to current events and the ever-evolving needs of educators. These resources, sourced from trusted partners, are aligned to state and national standards, and help educators bring the outside world into teaching and learning every day.
The K-12 learning platform is designed to work within the school systems’ existing infrastructure and workflows and provides safe, secure, simple access methods for educators and students. Through expanded, lasting partnerships with Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Schoology, Canvas, Brightspace, and Clever, integrating Discovery Education’s K-12 learning platform into existing IT architecture is easier than ever.
Social Studies Techbook.
Featuring standards-aligned, core-curricular resources that use an inquiry-based approach to enhance literacy and critical thinking skills, Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook aids teachers and students as they approach inquiry through the 5Es Framework: Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, and Evaluate. From stories of ancient cultures to in-depth explorations of civics and government, this comprehensive digital textbook takes concepts off the pages and brings lessons to life.
“In Africa, the Yoruba people say ‘Jumoke’ meaning ‘everybody loves the child,’” said Dr. Troy Monroe, Executive Director of Jumoke Academy. “At the Jumoke Academy, everyone is 100% focused on ensuring each scholar has the love and resources needed for academic success. Our new partnership with Discovery Education provides exciting new digital resources that will help prepare our scholars for success beyond the Academy.”
Discovery Education will also provide Jumoke Academy educators dedicated professional learning to help the school’s teachers effectively use these resources in the coming school year and recognize the full return on their edtech investment. Through these interactive professional development sessions, participants will learn best practices for integrating their new digital resources into instruction. Effective professional development will maximize the power of these resources, increase scholar engagement in learning, and support scholars’ continued academic development.
Jumoke Academy educators also enjoy access to the Discovery Education Community. A global network of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable idea sharing and inspiration.
“Discovery Education is delighted to see the students of Jumoke Academy discover the world around them through our flexible, high-quality digital services,” said Anthony Iuso, Discovery Education’s Coordinator of National Partnerships. “This dynamic school community is thoughtfully crafting a learning environment that will prepare students for success both now and in the future, and we are proud to be part of that work.”
