5 ways to rest, reflect, and recharge this summer

Summer offers educators a chance to focus on self-care and gear up for another academic year

Key points:

Summer break has finally arrived, and if you’re like most educators, you’re probably feeling a lot of conflicting emotions. There’s relief that the school year is behind you, pride in everything you’ve accomplished, but also exhaustion from months of pouring your time, energy, and heart into your students. This swirl of sensations can be disorienting for many educators, and in the process, they can have trouble focusing on what matters most during the summer season–themselves.

Summer offers educators the rare opportunity to step back, enrich themselves, and reignite the spark that fuels their passion for teaching. However, shifting gears and adopting a new self-care mindset is easier said than done. It takes a certain degree of mindfulness to quit thinking about the challenges ahead and settle yourself in the present.

For those struggling to find this balance, here are five simple ways to revitalize yourself this summer so you can return to the classroom rested, recharged, and ready for another meaningful year.

  1. Romance the ordinary: The simple moments of our day hold more significance than we realize. The taste of our morning coffee, the way sunlight hits our desk, a quiet walk outside in the cool evening–we need to slow down and give these experiences the attention they deserve. When we take time to appreciate the remarkable ordinary, we find it easier to put aside intrusive anxieties or stressful habits. We just need to pay attention.
  1. Unpack your teacher backpack: Educators carry a lot during the school year–both literally and metaphorically. Summer is chance to “unpack” the teacher backpack and let go of the expectations, worries, and emotional weight that have built up over the year. What this looks like can depend on the individual. Some might need to put aside their mental to-do lists; others may need to stop obsessing over the disappointments of the previous semester. Whatever it may be, give yourself permission to set it down and replace it with something that gives you positive energy.
  2. Build cocoon time: You are allowed to do nothing! That is hard to accept, but the reality is you don’t need to be productive over the summer. Instead, allow yourself to enjoy the intentional stillness–you deserve it. Challenge yourself by scheduling a “blank day” during the summer and protect it like it’s an important meeting. Sometimes the best thing you can do for positive, long-lasting growth is to do nothing.
  3. Create a highlight reel: It’s easy to forget about the wins when your focus is always on what’s next.Use this summer to look back on the moments of laughter, triumph, and impact. The memories that stand out should highlight your passion for teaching and your purpose in the classroom. Use them not just to reflect, but to remember what kind of teacher you want to keep being. You were the hero of more moments than you realize.
  4. Return to your WHY: The life of a teacher isn’t easy, but we always choose to keep going no matter what challenges we face. We didn’t become teachers just to collect a paycheck (although a BIGGER paycheck would certainly be nice); we became teachers to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students. Once you’ve managed to find your balance in the summer season, take the chance to return to your WHY. What was the spark that lit your passion for education? Use these months to reconnect with that enthusiasm and allow it to recharge you for the coming school year.

Summer offers each of us the opportunity to slow down, embrace the ordinary, and make time for the things that fill us up. Whether you’re enjoying a simple morning routine, revisiting your favorite moments from the classroom, or savoring a quieter schedule, this season is a chance to reward yourself for all that you’ve achieved throughout the year. The next school year will be here before you know it. Until then, enjoy a well-earned summer and celebrate another incredible year of teaching.
